Answers with Explanations:
1. 3) Here the error is in part 3 as 'comparatively' is used we will use positive degree instead of comparative degree of 'less' . Thus the correct sentence is - '...and, to a comparatively less degree in Sub-Saharan Africa, where a number of commodity exporters are struggling to maintain growth.'
2. 4) The word 'prevent' in part 4 cannot be follow the preposition 'for' . As the verb form of prevent is used we must use 'to' instead of 'for'.
3. 1) 'Had been' means something began in the past, lasted for some time, then ended. Thus it is inappropriate to use the same in the given context as it conveys the wrong meaning. A better fit phrase would be 'have been' that indicate something began in the past and has lasted into the present time. Hence the correct sentence is - 'Startups have been the ...'
4. C) The error is in part 3 wherein 'alot' is used which is a misspelling and makes the sentence incorrect. The correct word is 'a lot' where 'a' and the quantity 'lot' is distinguished.
5. B) 'Most' has been wrongly used in the second part of the sentence. 'Much' would be a better fit. Thus the correct sentence is - '...as much as two thirds of all known terrestrial species...'
6. D) The word 'improve' means 'to make better' which makes a correct meaning as the passage later talks about 'growth of trade and investment', which is only possible if the bilateral relationship between the two countries is 'improved'. The word 'change' does not convey any proper meaning here as it does not define whether the change must be for good or bad. The word 'strengthen' means 'to make or become stronger' and is similar in meaning to 'improve'. Thus both option A and C fit here. Option D is the correct answer.
7. B) The word 'news' does not convey any meaning here. The word 'optimism' means 'hopefulness and confidence about the future or the success of something' and fits here as the rest of the sentence conveys this sense. The word 'hope' means 'a feeling of expectation and desire for a particular thing to happen.' which is not very appropriate here as the kind of hope has not been specified after the blank space. The word 'regret' conveys opposite sense than the one intended.
8. A) The given passage is concerned about the strengthening of trade relationship between two countries, the international cooperation between which will cause global benefits withe respect to something. Since the concern is about trade, 'economy' fits best making option A the correct answer. Option C is irrelevant as 'peace' is not the subject of the passage. Options C and B are too general terms to be used here.
9. D) The word 'podium' means 'a raised platform' which does not convey any meaning here as it refers to a specific object. The word 'platform' means 'a policy' or 'a programme' and fits in the blank space. The word 'schedule' means 'a plan' which is not relevant here. The word 'stance' means 'pose or attitude' which does not convey any meaning here. Thus only option D fits here.
10. C) 'Peace' is a word that is not relevant in business affairs. The word 'camaraderie' means 'mutual trust and friendship among people who spend a lot of time together.' The word is inappropriate here as it is an international affair which cannot be characterised by this. The word 'cooperation' means 'collaboration' or' working together ' which has a correct meaning as it is complementary with the term 'mutual understanding'. The word 'terms' is quite inappropriate here. The word 'arraignment' means 'to take before a judge based on charges brought against the person' which does not make any sense here. Thus option C is the correct answer.
