Vilas Bank appoints B K Manjunath as Part-time Chairman for 3 years
- Lakshmi Vilas Bank (LVB)
appointed B K Manjunath as a Part-time chairman for three years.
- Manjunath is a member of
Institute of Chartered Accountants of India and a practicing charted
accountant for the last 25 years.
- Lakshmi Vilas Bank informed the
stock exchange that subsequent to an approval granted by the Reserve Bank
of India (RBI), the Board of Directors of the bank at their meeting have
co-opted B K Manjunath as additional director in the category of
Non-Executive and Independent Director.
Trump nominates Christopher Wray as new FBI
director
- US President Donald Trump has
nominated former justice department official Christopher Wray as the new
director of theFederal Bureau of Investigations (FBI).
- He would be replacing James
Comey.
- Wray’s nomination would require
confirmation from the US Senate.

Muttiah Muralitharan inducted into ICC's Hall of
Fame
- Sri Lankan cricketer Muttiah
Muralitharan was admitted into the International Cricket Council's (ICC)
Hall of Fame.
- ICC Chairman Dave Richardson
handed the former off-spinner the Hall of Fame memento in front of the Sri
Lankan squad who were playing India in a Champions Trophy Group B Game.
- Muralitharan was awarded the
honor along with Arthur Morris, George Lohmann and Karen Rolton by fellow
ICC Cricket Hall of Famers and members of the media.
Virat Kohli Indian cricketer in top 100 of Forbes
list of world’s Highest paid athletes
- Indian cricket team captain
Virat Kohli is the sportsperson from the country to feature in the world’s
100 highest paid athletes in the latest Forbes list topped by soccer star
Cristiano Ronaldo.
- Virat Kohli has been ranked 89th
on the 2017 Forbes list of ‘The World’s highest paid athletes’ with a
total pay of $ 22 million that includes $ three million from salary and
winnings and another 19 million from endorsements.
- The list has been topped by
Ronaldo with a total pay of 93 million dollars.
Bengaluru girl Sahithi Pingali to get a planet in
Milky Way named after her
- Sahithi Pingali, a twelfth
grader from Bengaluru will get a minor planet in Milky Way named after her
as a reward for developing an integrated mobile phone app and lake
monitoring kit to monitor pollution in water bodies.
- Sahithi Pingali had presented
her paper titled “An Innovative Crowdsourcing Approach to Monitoring
Freshwater Bodies” at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair
(ISEF).
- Intel International Science and
Engineering Fair (ISEF) is considered as the largest pre-college
scientific research event in the world.
- Sahithi won the Gold Medal for
her research on ‘An Innovative Crowdsourcing Approach to Monitoring
Freshwater Bodies’ on Bengaluru’s lakes at ISWEEEP (The International
Sustainable World Engineering Energy Environment Project) Olympiad held in
Texas.

Axis Bank to issue biodegradable prepaid gift
cards
- Axis Bank Ltd has announced
biodegradable prepaid gift cards on the occasion of World Environment Day
(05th June).
- With this, the bank has become
the first to introduce biodegradable cards in the country. The card has
the look and feel of regular plastic cards and can be used in PoS
terminals and ATMs. Biodegradable cards can also be recycled.

retains Top position in Fortune 500 List
- Walmart topped the Fortune's
annual list of Americas top 500 companies for the fifth consecutive year
with the revenue of $ 485.8 million.
- IT based Apple made the progress
in the profit, with $53 billion jumped from 5 to 3 place
- Amazon.com moved from 29 to 18
place.
- Walgreens jumped from 35 to 19th
place
- Facebook jumped 85 to 157th

Former ICHR
chairman Basudev Chatterji passes away
- Noted historian and former ICHR
(Indian Council for Historical Research) chairman Basudev Chatterji passed
away in Guwahati, Assam.
- He taught at St Stephen's College in
Delhi, the University of Hyderabad besides supervising undergraduates at
the University of Cambridge.
- Chatterji had proposed for
documenting histories both archival as well as non-archival materials such
as church records, private letters of the Second World War period, oral
histories, folktales, and folk songs.
Eminent
rights activist Mehrunnisa Dalwai passes away
- Eminent rights activist Mehrunnisa Dalwai (87-year)
and the protagonist of a reformist movement 'Muslim Satyashodhak Mandal'
passed away in Pune.
- She worked for justice and equal
rights for Muslim women and
spearheaded a march in Mumbai seeking abolition of triple 'talaq'.
- She also founded Islamic
Research Institute and Maharashtra Talaq Mukti Morcha.

One Million
Dollar Fund Established for BRICS Media
- The
Brazil-Russia-India-China-South Africa (BRICS) grouping established a one
million dollar fund for boosting media cooperation in the five-nation
grouping.
- The proposal is also aimed at
the joint development of BRICS digital media, financial information
services and promoting people- to-people contacts.
- BRICS is the acronym for an
association of five major emerging national economies: Brazil, Russia,
India, China and South Africa.
World Health Organisation revises Protocol for
Antibiotics
- The World Health Organization
(WHO) revised the protocol for antibiotics.
- This revision is the biggest
such revision of the antibiotics section in the 40-year history of the
Essential Medicines List (EML).
- The World Health Organization
(WHO) is a specialized agency of the United Nations that acts as a
coordinating authority on international public health.
SCO Summit Begins in Astana
- The summit of the Shanghai
Cooperation Organization (SCO) is being held in Astana, Kazakhstan, June
8-9.
- Chinese President Xi Jinping,
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, and Russian President Vladimir Putin
will attend the summit among others.
- In the course of the summit,
India and Pakistan will be formally admitted into the SCO.

IIT-Delhi,
IIT-Bombay, IISc among world’s top 200 universities
- The Indian Institute of
Technology (IIT)-Bombay has broken into the top 200 club in the latest
edition of the ‘Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings’, to
join IIT-Delhi and Indian Institute of Science (IISc), Bengaluru, in this
group.
- With this, India, for the first
time, is home to three of the top 200 universities in the world.
- According to the ‘QS World
University Rankings 2018’, IIT-Bombay rank 179 this time.
- IIT-Delhi has replaced IISc as
the best ranked Indian institution in the world. So, while IIT-Delhi has
risen from 185 rank to 172 this year, IISc slipped over 30 places from 152
to 190.
- In the overall rankings,
Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continues its run as the
world’s best university for the sixth consecutive year.

Minister to inaugurate the second edition of National Health Editors Conference
on Yoga in New Delhi
- The second National Health
Editors’ Conference on Yoga will be inaugurated by Minister of State for
AYUSH (Independent Charge), Shri Shripad Yesso Naik at National Media
Centre in New Delhi.
- The theme of this year’s
conference is “Yoga for Health and Harmony”.
- The conference is being
organized by Ministry of AYUSH in association with Press Information
Bureau (PIB), M/o Information & Broadcasting and Central Council for
Research in Yoga and Naturopathy (M/o AYUSH) as a part of celebrations of
the 3rd International Day of Yoga.
India Signs OECD agreement to Check Tax Evasion by
MNC
- India signed the OECD
(Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development) multilateral
convention that aims to check cross-border tax evasion by multinational
companies.
- Union Finance Minister Arun
Jaitley signed the multilateral convention in Paris, France to implement
tax treaty related measures to prevent base erosion and profit shifting.
- The Multilateral Convention is
an outcome of the OECD/G20 Project to ensure Base Erosion and Profit
Shifting (BEPS) which is resorted to by Multi National Company's through
tax planning strategies by exploiting gaps and mismatches in tax rules.

Railways Human Resources Round Table Conference
- Minister of Railways Shri Suresh
Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated Indian Railways' 1st HR Round Table
Conference in New Delhi.
- Chairman, Railway Board, Shri A.
K. Mital, Member Staff Shri Pradeep Kumar, other Railway Board Members and
senior officials were also present on the occasion.
- Indian Railways is the biggest
civilian employer in the country spanning the length and breadth of the
sub-continent within strength of over 13 lakh employees.
- The employees are spread over 10
departments in 17 Zones, 6 Production Units and 68 Divisions.
India and UNOSSC launch Partnership Fund to
Promote Sustainable Development
- India and the UN Office for
South Cooperation have launched a partnership fund to promote sustainable
development projects across the developing world.
- The India-UN Development
Partnership Fund was launched on occasion of the World Oceans Day at a
special ceremony held at the Permanent Mission of India.
- The United Nations Office for
South-South Cooperation (UNOSSC) was established with an objective to
promote, coordinate and support South-South and triangular cooperation
across the world and within the United Nations system.
Civil Aviation Ministry to roll out ‘DigiYatra’
for Air Travellers
- The Ministry of Civil Aviation
is adding a digital experience for air travelers through DigiYatra
platform.
- The ‘DigiYatra’ is an
industry-led initiative co-ordinated by the Ministry in line with Prime
Minister Narendra Modi’s Digital India’s vision to transform the nation
into a digitally empowered society.
- The initiative will help
passengers plan their trips efficiently by identifying price trends and
estimate future airfares at the time of ticket booking.
- Passengers will also get
relevant information pertaining to various facilities, protocols, airline
timings, queue lengths at airports.

Ramkumar Ramanathan lifts ITF men’s Futures tennis
title
- India’s Ramkumar Ramanathan
lifted the ITF (International Tennis Federation) men’s Futures tennis
title after outplaying Raymond Sarmiento of the USA in straight sets in
Singapore.
- The top-seeded Indian beat the
second seeded player 6-2, 6-2 in the final of the event. It was the first
title of the season for Ramkumar. A regular in India’s Davis Cup team,
Ramkumar had recently competed in the qualifying event of the French Open
but failed to make it to the main round of the Grand Slam tournament.
