APPOINTMENTS
Trump
appoints Indian-American Raj Shah to key position in Communications team
- US
President Donald Trump has appointed Indian-American Raj Shah to a key
position in his Communications team. Shah will serve as Deputy Assistant
to the President and Principal Deputy Press Secretary.
- Formerly,
Shah was served as Deputy Assistant to the President and Deputy
Communications Director. Trump also appointed Hope Hicks as his
Communications Director.
- Earlier,
Hicks was served as Assistant to the President and Interim Communications
Director.
UN
Secretary-General appoints Peter Thomson as 1st special envoy for oceans
- UN
Secretary-General ‘Antonio Guterres’ has appointed Peter Thomson as the
first special envoy for the oceans.
- Peter
Thomson played a leading role at the first-ever UN conference on oceans in
June.
- The
193 UN member states issued an urgent call for action to reverse the
decline in the health and productivity of the world's oceans.

Reserve
Bank of India introduce Rs 100 Coin to mark MG Ramachandran’s birth centenary
- As per
the notification of Finance Ministry, the Reserve Bank of India will
introduce 100 rupees coin to mark the birth centenary (hundredth
anniversary) of AIADMK founder Late Dr. M G Ramachandran.
- On the
obverse, the face of the coin will bear Lion Capitol of Ashoka Pillar in the
center with Satyamev Jayate inscribed below on it in Devanagari script.
- On the
reverse side, the portrait of Dr. MG Ramachandran will be in the center.
- The
standard weight of the coin will be 35 grams.

Paytm
Partners with NPCI
- Paytm
Payments Bank (PPB) partnered with the National Payments Corporation of
India (NPCI) to launch a RuPay-powered digital debit card.
- The
customers will now be able to transact at all merchants who accept credit
and debit cards.
- As a payments
bank, PPB can take a demand deposit of up to Rs 1 lakh per customer, but
it cannot undertake lending activities.
PayU Ties
up With IRCTC
- Payment
gateway provider PayU announced its collaborations to provide users a safe
and secure option to pay for rail tickets booked via the IRCTC website and
Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC).
- It
will now be available as a payment option under the Multiple Payment
Services (MPS) option on the IRCTC website at the payment stage of booking
an e- ticket.
- This
option will enable users to make a safe and secure transaction and also
various payment options like internet banking, debit/credit card, and
e-wallet.
DEATHS
Gay rights
activist Edith Windsor passes away
- Gay
rights activist Edith Windsor, whose same-gender marriage fight led to a
landmark US ruling, passed away. She was 88.
- It was
Windsor’s efforts that Supreme Court struck down the Defense of Marriage
Act in 2013, granting same-sex married couples federal recognition for the
first time.

AFFAIRS
US Supreme
Court allows President Trump to implement refugee ban
- The US
Supreme Court allowed President Donald Trump to implement broadly a ban on
refugees entering the country from around the world.
- All
nine SC justices agreed with the Trump administration to block a federal
appeals court ruling that exempted refugees with contractual relationships
with resettlement organisations from the ban.
- Already
President signed revised executive order in March that banned travellers
from six Muslim-majority countries namely Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan,
Syria and Yemen - for 90 days and locked out most refugees for 120 days.
Japan PM
Shinzo Abe in Ahmedabad for India-Japan Annual Summit
- Prime
Minister Narendra Modi received his Japanese counterpart Shinzo Abe at
Ahmedabad in Gujarat.
- The
12th edition of the India and Japan summit will be held in Gandhinagar,
Gujarat.
- The
two leaders will review the recent progress in the multifaceted
cooperation between India and Japan under the framework of their ‘Special
Strategic and Global Partnership.
- They
will also attend a function to mark the commencement of work of India’s
first high-speed rail project between Ahmedabad and Mumbai.
Halimah
Yacob becomes first female President of Singapore
- Former
speaker of Singapore’s parliament Mdm Halimah Yacob (63 -years) has been
declared as the President of Singapore.
- She
will become the country’s first female President and second Malay
president for Singapore.
- Under
section 15 of the Presidential Election Act, declared Mdm Halimah to be
elected to the office of President as only one candidate stands nominated
at end of nomination period.
- This
year's Presidential Election was reserved for Malay candidates.

Union
Cabinet approves introduction of Payment of Gratuity (Amendment) Bill, 2017 in
Parliament
- The
Union Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 12 September
2017 approved the introduction of the Payment of Gratuity (Amendment)
Bill, 2017 in the Parliament. The Bill amends Payment of Gratuity Act,
1972.
- The
Amendment Bill calls for increasing the maximum limit of gratuity of
employees in the private sector and in Public Sector Undertakings or
Autonomous Organizations under Government which are not covered under CCS
(Pension) Rules, at par with Central Government employees.
Finance
Minister Constitutes GoM to Monitor IT Challenge in GST
- Finance
Minister Arun Jaitley constituted a Group of Ministers (GoM) headed by
Bihar Deputy Chief Minister Sushil Kumar Modi to monitor and resolve the
IT challenges faced in the implementation of GST.
- It is
assisted by the Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Goods and Services
Tax Network (GSTN).
- The
Committees is set up in pursuance of the decision taken at the 21st
Meeting of GST Council held in Hyderabad.
Kerala to
open India's first transgender-exclusive clinics
- Kerala
opens India's first transgender-exclusive clinics at government medical
colleges across the state.
- They
are planning to open Transgender Clinics in all government medical
colleges in the state.
- We
also plan to provide facilities for their surgery at least in two medical
colleges.
- The
first clinic will be set up at the government medical college of Kottayam
within the next two months and will be one of the first clinics to provide
the sex-change surgery.
Sachin
Tendulkar launches project to develop the poorest ward in Mumbai
- Former
Indian cricketer Sachin Tendulkar launched Mission-24 a programme aimed at
improving the quality of life in one of Mumbai’s poorest wards through
collaborative efforts in the next 24 months.
- The
main aim of the program to provide basic amenities to residents of M-East
ward that includes slums of Shivaji Nagar, Deonar and Mankhurd.
- Through
this project, the organisations aim to provide amenities like secondary
schools and colleges, Anganwadi's, maternity homes, health posts and
dispensaries in the ward. It also aims to improve sanitation, create more
open spaces and look at computer safety.
Mother
Dairy and Maharashtra Government Tie up For Processing Plant
- The
Maharashtra Government and Mother Dairy Fruit and Vegetable Pvt. Ltd, a
subsidiary of National Dairy Development Board (NDDB) signed a lease
agreement to set up a state-of-the-art milk and milk products processing
plant.
- As per
the agreement, a dairy development initiative will begin in Vidarbha and
Marathwada regions to provide access to milk producers to markets in
Nagpur and Mumbai.
India’s
first advanced Homoeopathy Virology lab inaugurated in Kolkata
- India’s
first state of art virology laboratory inaugurated at Dr Anjali Chatterjee
Regional Research Institute for Homoeopathy in Kolkata, West Bengal.
- The
lab plays important in developing new drugs and technologies in
Homoeopathy to combat emerging challenges of viral diseases.
- The
laboratory is only one of its kind in India for conducting basic and
fundamental research in Homoeopathy for viral diseases like influenza,
dengue.
SPORTS AFFAIRS
Four-day
annual BSF sports meet begins in Jammu
- The
four-day annual Border Security Force (BSF) sports meet has begun in
Jammu.
- The
Inter-Frontier Sports Competition of the Border Security Force is aimed at
preparing the Jawans for national and international-level championships.
- Around
1,200 personnel would participate in sports such as wrestling, boxing,
weight-lifting and Kabbadi.
Los Angeles
to host 2028 Olympics
- Los
Angeles will host the 2028 Olympics. The evaluation commission of
International Olympic Committee (IOC) gave the formal go ahead to its bid
on 12 September 2017. Today, the full IOC will award the 2024 Games to
Paris and the 2028 Games in Los Angeles.
- Los
Angeles had originally bid for 2024, but because of the new date, it had
to make changes to its host contract. The evaluation commission said that
although details need to be finalised, it is confident Los Angeles can
host Olympics in 2028.
