Answers
with Explanations:
1. A) In the first half of the argument, before the blank, the author presents
the view of science. In the next half of the argument, he presents the contrarian
view. This means that a question is required in the middle or statement that
changes the flow of information. Also the following sentences talk specifically
about animals presenting their concern. Therefore, option (A) is the most
appropriate.
It cannot be about being practical. The usage of
option (C) disrupts the flow of the following sentences. So does option (D).
2.
C) The last sentence
should have a connection to the paragraph which can be seen only in option (C).
Since it has been mentioned in the paragraph that it is ineffective and
dangerous so the last line has to be something opposite in meaning to what is
mentioned. Option (A) is logically incorrect as neutrality is not the opposite
of logic and reason. Option (B) is too pessimistic and option (D) is out of
context. Thus option (C) is the correct answer.
3. C) The paragraph is such that two things are compared and contrasted. First
something about the Germans is mentioned and then about the Englishmen.
Following the structure the last sentence is about the Germans so the sentence
which will end this should be about the Englishmen and something contrasting
should be stated. Thus option (C) is the correct answer.
4.
A) The sentence gives us
the hint that the blank should contain something that gives out the symptoms of
chronic stress. The first half of the sentence is about the ephemeral low feelings,
so the best answer will be option (A) which states the persistent depressing
feelings and their impact on life. The other options like (D) and (C) are contextually
different. Option (B) is totally opposite in meaning.
5.
C) Since the word
'fallacy' is mentioned in the paragraph which means 'a mistaken belief', the
strategy cannot be effective. So option (A) is eliminated. Option and (D) are
logically incorrect. Option (C) is the correct answer which clearly shows that
it is ineffective so it is a fallacy.
6.
D) The adverb 'often' is
appropriate and does not need to be changed. Since the determiner 'more' is
used the adjective 'cheap' should not be used in comparative form that is
'cheaper' but in the positive form 'cheap'. Also 'more' can be replaced by
'much'. Thus option (D) is the correct answer.
7.
E) The sentence needs no improvement as there is
no error in the usage of the article or adjectives. This is because the use of
'the' before strongest is correct and the plural form of the noun 'critics'
must be used after 'one of'. Thus option (E) is the correct answer.
8.
B) The error lies in the usage of the word 'its'
as the subject is plural noun which is 'banks'. Thus the pronoun should be
'their'. There is no error in the usage of the preposition or verb. Thus option
(B) is the correct answer.
9.
D) The article ‘a’ is needed in the sentence and
there is no error in the usage of the verb or the word ‘as’. Also the use of
noun 'informations' is incorrect as no such noun exist. Thus option (D) is the
correct answer.
10.
A) The error lies in the usage of the word
‘like’ and needs to be replaced with the word ‘likely’ and the preposition ‘to’
after the word ‘likely’ needs to be eliminated. The rest of the words have been
used correctly. Thus option (A) is the correct answer.
