Union Cabinet committee approves seven top-level changes in Banks
  • The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved seven top-level changes in various public sector banks.
  • Usha Ananthasubramanian, MD and CEO of Punjab National Bank appointed as MD & CEO of Allahabad Bank
  • Sunil Mehta, Executive Director of Corporation Bank, appointed as MD & CEO of Punjab National Bank
  • Dinabandhu Mohapatra served as Executive Director at Canara Bank, appointed as MD and CEO of Bank of India
  • G Rajkiran Rai, Executive Director at Oriental Bank of Commerce appointed MD & CEO of Union Bank of India
  • R Subramaniakumar, Executive Director, Indian Overseas Bank as MD & CEO of the bank
  • RA Sankara Narayanan, ED, Bank of India, has been appointed MD & CEO of Vijaya Bank
  • MO Rego MD & CEO of Bank of India appointed MD & CEO of Syndicate Bank
Kerala govt reinstates TP Senkumar as police chief
  • Chief Minister of Kerala Pinarayi Vijayan has reinstated Senior IPS officer TP Senkumar as the police chief after Supreme Court order to restore his post.
  • Senkumar was moved out of the office the day Vijayan assumed office in May last year.
  • Senkumar is set to retire on 30th June.

Kashmiri wins 2016 Wisden-MCC Cricket 'Photograph of the Year' award
  • A Srinagar based freelance photographer has done Kashmir proud, pocketing the prestigious 2016 Wisden-MCC (Melbourne Cricket Council) Cricket Photograph of the Year for a stunning image, which captured boys playing cricket in the outskirts of the city, clicked by him.
  • Saqib Majeed, an engineer by profession clicked the award-winning picture at the Nishat garden in Srinagar.Majeed is the first Kashmiri and second Asian after Atul Kamble to receive the prestigious award.
  • Every year MCC publishes a book titled Wisden Cricketer Almanack, which includes best sports pictures from across the globe. This year's edition includes Majeed's picture.

RBI to authorizeThe promulgation of the Banking Regulation Amendment
  • The promulgation of the Banking Regulation (Amendment) Ordinance, 2017 inserting two new Sections (viz. 35AA and 35AB) after Section 35A of the Banking Regulation Act, 1949 enables the Union Government to authorize the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) to direct banking companies to resolve specific stressed assets by initiating insolvency resolution process.
  • The recent enactment of Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code (IBC), 2016 has opened up new possibilities for time-bound resolution of stressed assets.
  • The Securitisation and Reconstruction of Financial Assets and Enforcement of Security Interest Act (SARFAESI) and Debt Recovery Acts amended to facilitate recoveries for timely resolution of stressed assets.

Adani signs steel supply deal with Australian Steel Group Arrium
  • Gautam Shantilal Adani signed a 74 million dollar landmark deal with Australian steel group Arrium to buy steel for a 400-km rail line for its Carmichael coal mine project.
  • Arrium’s division OneSteel Manufacturing Proprietary limited will supply 54,000 tonnes of steel to build the rail line.
  • Adani's 16 billion dollar Carmicheal mine project has been resolved recently.
DEATHS
Leila Seth, first woman judge of Delhi HC, dies
  • Leila Seth, the first woman judge of the Delhi High Court and a member of the Justice J. S. Verma committee set up to take a re-look into rape laws in India after the December 16, 2012 gang rape in Delhi, died of cardiac arrest  at her residence in Noida.  She was 86.
  • A family member said there would be no cremation. As per her will, Justice Leila Seth’s body would be donated to the Army Research and Referral Hospital here for the advancement of medical sciences and research. There will, however, be a memorial service on May 28.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
Worls's largest X- ray laser lights up in Germany
  • The world's biggest X-ray laser generated its first light in Hamburg, Germany.
  • The 3.4 kilometer (2.1 mi) long European X-ray Free Electron Laser (XFEL) produced a pulsing laser light with a wavelength of 0.8 nanometer.
  • XFEL  is a billion times more brilliant than conventional synchrotron light sources and can capture images at atomic resolution.
3 Indian-origin scientists elected fellows of UK Royal Society
  • Three Indian-origin scientists have been elected fellows of the Royal Society, Britain's independent fellowship of many of the world's most eminent scientists, for their "outstanding contributions to science".
  • Krishna Chatterjee from Cambridge University, Subhash Khot from New York University and Yadvinder Malhi from Oxford University are among 50 distinguished people from across the world elected as the 2017 cohort of fellows of the academy.
  • Royal Society's first Indian-origin president, Nobel Prize-winning scientist Venki Ramakrishnan, welcomed the latest batch into the ranks of the society
  • Chatterjee has been recognised for his discoveries of genetic disorders of thyroid gland formation, regulation of hormone synthesis and hormone action, which have advanced the fundamental knowledge of the thyroid axis.
  • Khot is a theoretical computer scientist who is credited with providing insight into unresolved problems in the field of computational complexity.
NATIONAL AFFAIRS
Maharajas’ Express to begin new circuits 'Southern Sojourn' & 'Southern Jewels'
  • Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has decided to launch two new circuits (Southern Sojourn & Southern Jewels) of its flagship luxury train Maharajas' Express this year.
  • The ‘Southern Sojourn’ will cover Goa, Hampi, Mysore, Ernakulam, Kumarakom and Trivandrum.
  • The ‘Southern Jewel’ will cover Chettinad, Mahabalipuram, Mysore Hampi and Goa.
  • The 23-coach Maharajas' Express has a capacity of 88 guests.
India Integrated Transport Summit signed MoUs Worth Rs 2 Lakh Crores
  • Thirty-four Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) amounting about Rs 2 lakh crores were signed in the three-day India Integrated Transport and Logistics Summit that was concluded in New Delhi.
  • Minister of Road Transport & Highways and Shipping Shri Nitin Gadkari set an urgent need to bring down logistics cost in the country to globally comparable rates.
  • The Summit was attended by around 3000 delegates from India and abroad, which included central and state government organizations , international organizations like World Bank and ADB, delegates, global transport and supply chain experts and representatives of private companies.
  • The sessions focused on six major themes that included Multi Modal Logistics Parks, New developments in Urban Transportation, Freight Corridors for Economic Development, Supply Chain Transformation- Storage Innovations, GST and Role of Digitization for Decongestion and Standards and Skills for Logistics.
Goa to launch two-wheeler ambulances
  • The Goa Health department is planning to introduce two-wheeler ambulances from July to help people meeting with accidents in tourist spots across the state.
  • Para-medics will ride the two-wheeler ambulances mounted with essential medical equipment which can reach the accident or casualty spots quickly, according to Health Minister Vishwajit Rane.
  • Such an ambulance service is already in place in Karnataka and Goa would be the second state to do so.
Assam declared as Disturbed Area Under AFSPA for 3 More Months
  • The Government declared the entire Assam as a “disturbed” area under the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) for another 3 months.
  • In addition, the government has placed three districts of Arunachal Pradesh, namely Tirap, Changlang and Longding and other areas falling under 16 police stations bordering Assam.
  • In Assam, 75 incidents of violence have been reported in 2016 and 9 in 2017.
  • The Assam has been placed under AFSPA since November 1990.
34 MoUs worth Rs 2 lakh crores signed at India Integrated Transport & Logistic Summit
  • According to the union minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari, 2 lakh crore rupee investment has been signed at three-day India Integrated Transport and Logistic Summit in New Delhi.
  • Total 34 investment pacts committed and more than 15 pertain to setting up multi-modal logistics parks by state governments.
  • Agreements for port connectivity and land ports were also inked.
SPORTS AFFAIRS
ICC raises Women's World cup Prize money
  • International cricket council (ICC) tries to popularise women's cricket and also the upcoming 2017 World cup in England by increasing thre prize money to $2 million.
  • This is ten times the amount that was awarded in the lat edition in 2013.
  • The ICC announced that Decision Review system (DRS) will be put in place for the first time in women's cricket during the eight team tournament in June.
Lionel Messi's suspension lifted by FIFA
  • The world soccer's ruling body FIFA (Federation Internationale de Football Association) has lifted a four-match international suspension on Argentina forward Lionel Messi.
  • Earlier, he was banned for insulting an assistant referee during a qualifier against Chile in March.
  • The decision based on television images as the incident was missed by match officials.
