Shurhozelie Liezeitsu elected as the new Nagaland CM:
  • Nagaland People’s Front (NPF) president Shurhozelie Liezeitsu will be sworn in as the state’s 11th Chief Minister. 
  • As Nagaland Former Chief Minister T R Zeliang stepped down from the post on February 19, 2017 facing revolt from his party MLAs against the decision to reserve 33% seats for women in urban local bodies.
Ramakrishnan appointed as TCS CFO & N Chandrasekaran named TCS Chairman:
  • Tata Sons Chairman designate Natarajan Chandrasekaran will also hold the chairmanship of the group's crown jewel Tata Consultancy Services. 
  • The country's largest software services provider has also named V Ramakrishnan as its Chief Financial Officer to succeed Rajesh Gopinathan, who will take over as the CEO and MD of the Tata Group company.
US President names Lt Gen HR McMaster as new National Security Advisor
  • The President of United States, Donald Trump appointed Lieutenant General Herbert Raymond McMaster as his new National Security Advisor on 20 February 2017.
  • The announcement was made by Trump himself at his Mar-a-Lago residence in Palm Beach, Florida. He described McMaster as a man of tremendous talent and experience, who is highly respected by those in the military and added that the US government is honoured to have him in its service.
  • McMaster will be succeeding Michael Flynn, who was forced to resign on 13 February after reports emerged about him misleading the US Vice President Mike Pence about the discussions he had held with the Russian ambassador to US about US sanctions on Moscow before the presidential transition.
Abhijit Sarkar appointed Vice Chairman of Asian Hockey Federation
  • The Asian Hockey Federation (AHF) on 21 February 2017 confirmed the appointment of Abhijit Sarkar as its new Vice Chairman.
  • Sarkar was also appointed the Chairman of the AHF Commercial and TV Committee with immediate effect.
  • The decision to appoint Sarkar was taken after an Executive Board Meeting held on 7 February 2017.
  • Sarkar has been associated with the Sahara India Pariwar since 2004. He has also served as the Head of Corporate Communications, Corporate Affairs and Relations, and the Sports Division at Sahara India Pariwar.
FreeCharge CEO Govind Rajan Quits
  • The chief executive officer of Jasper Infotech-owned digital payments platform FreeCharge, Govind Rajan has submitted his resigned.
  • Snapdeal’s chief strategy and investment officer, Jason Kothari will oversee the business operations of FreeCharge.
Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre appointed chairman of Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal
  • Justice Abhay Manohar Sapre, a sitting judge of the Supreme Court of India, was appointed as the chairman of the Cauvery Water Disputes Tribunal on 21 February 2017. He was nominated for the post by the Chief Justice JS Khehar.
  • The post was vacant since Justice Balbir Singh Chauhan resigned from the post. Justice Chauhan, who retired from the apex court in July 2014, was heading the Cauvery Water Disputes tribunal as its Chairperson.
  • In addition to this, Justice Sapre’s appointment as Chairman of the tribunal turns up to be a significant one as the Supreme Court will start hearing the Cauvery case on a regular basis from 21 March 2017.
N Chandrasekaran elected chairman of Indian Hotels
  • N Chandrasekaran has been elected as the Chairman of its board of directors. N Chandrasekaran has been elected as the Chairman of the board of directors of the company with effect from February 22, 2017 vide a written resolution of the Board.
  • He was initially appointed as a Member of the board on January 27, 2017 Chandrasekaran had taken over as Chairman of Tata Sons on February 21, becoming the first non Parsi Chairman of the USD 103 billion Tata Group after heading its crown jewel TCS for years.

Tata Steel owned Katamati Iron Mine Wins Best Green Organization Award
  • Katamati Iron Mine, owned by Tata Steel, was conferred with the Best Green Organisation of the Year Award on February 18, 2017 at the Global Green Future Leadership Awards in Mumbai.
  • The Global Green Future Leadership Awards, organized by World CSR Day, was honored to Katamati Iron Mine in recognition of its environmental protection measures.
  • The award was received by Rahul Kishore, Head of Mining Operations, Katamati Iron Mine on behalf of Tata Steel from Jordan Reeves, Consul General of Canada in Mumbai.
EDII wins International Mercury Award 2016-17:
  • The Ahmedabad-based Entrepreneurship Development Institute of India (EDII), an acknowledged national resource institute for entrepreneurship education, research, training and institution-building, has received the prestigious International Mercury Awards (IMA) for the year 2016-17 for the best overall presentation of its 2015-2016 annual report. 
Sahitya Akademi awards 2016 presented to 24 authors
  • Sahitya Akademi Awards 2016 were conferred on twenty-four writers on 22 February 2017. The eminent authors were conferred with the award/honour for writing in as different Indian languages.
  • The awards were conferred on them at the annual Festival of Letters. The festival, which began 21 February 2017, will continue till 26 February 2017.
  • The distinguished physicist and Marathi writer Jayant Vishnu Narlikar was the chief guest of the award ceremony.

Karnataka Bank bags 2 awards
  • Karnataka Bank has bagged two ‘IBA-Banking Technology’ awards. The bank was the winner in ‘Best financial inclusion initiatives (small bank)’ category, and was runner-up in ‘Best use of digital and channels technology (small bank)’ category.
  • IBA-Banking Technology award recognises and rewards individuals, professionals and banks who have recorded noteworthy technology and business benefits in 2016.

SBI Rebrands Corporate Website as bank.sbi
  • The country’s largest lender State Bank of India (SBI) rebranded its corporate website as “bank.sbi” from the earlier “sbi.co.in” on February 19, 2017.
  • Now bank.sbi is the highest domain protocol commonly known as generic top level domain (gTLD).
  • With this, SBI has become the first banking organization in India to adopt gTLD for its internet presence.
  • The adoption of gTLD will enable SBI to use its corporate name .sbi as their website’s top-level identifier instead of using “.com” or “.co.in” as domains.
SIDBI, Vijaya Bank combine to provide concessional loans to micro, small units:
  • Small Industries Development Bank of India (SIDBI) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Vijaya Bank for providing concessional finance to micro and small enterprises (MSEs).
  • The MoU aims at promoting and strengthening units in the MSE segment through concessional funding that is at the marginal cost of funds-based lending rate (MCLR) of Vijaya Bank under refinance from SIDBI.
Bharat Financial Inclusion Ltd launches instant microloan facility
  • Hyderabad based non-banking finance company Microfinance institution Bharat Financial Inclusion Ltd launched an instant loan approval at a village near Bassi in Jaipur district, Rajasthan.
  • The objective of this initiative to help rural areas embrace cashless transactions. The loan amount will be  deposited directly to the loanees bank account.
  • The loan facility based on a three-step verification process of Aadhar-based eKYC, credit bureau authentication and e-Sign and non collateral loans up to Rs 60,000 for one year to rural women.
  • It will be rolled out by June 2017 in all microfinance company's nationwide network with several being in Rajasthan, Bihar and Delhi.

Microsoft-Flikpkart Announce Strategic Tie-Up
  • US based IT giant Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella and Indian electronic commerce company Flipkart Group CEO Binny Bansal has announced a “strategic partnership” to provide consumers in the country the best online shopping service.
  • As per the deal, Flipkart, will adopt Microsoft Azure as its exclusive public cloud platform.
  • Microsoft Azure will add a layer of advanced cloud technologies and analytics to Flipkart’s existing data centres.
  • Flipkart also plans to leverage artificial intelligence, machine learning and analytics capabilities in Azure, such as Cortana Intelligence Suite and Power BI, to optimise its data for innovative merchandising, advertising, marketing and customer service.
Bharat QR code launched to push less-cash economy:
  • Bharat QR code the world's first inter-operable payment acceptance solution, was launched as part of efforts to move towards less-cash economy at an insignificant cost, according to RBI.  
  • Payment networks such as MasterCard and Visa have joined hands with NPCI to launch Bharat QR, a common Quick Response(QR) code that would enable seamless digital payments without card swiping machines. 
Dish TV joins hands with ICICI Bank for digital payments
  • Direct-to-home operator Dish TV Thursday said it has tied-up with private lender ICICI Bank for digital payments.
  • This alliance with ICICI Bank through UPI will drive higher customer adoption and allow them to be a part of the digital economy. This will also aid our vastly spread customers with or without Internet access to recharge conveniently.
Microsoft to deploy Azure Stack in Andhra Pradesh:
  • The chief minister Chandrababu Naidu and Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella singed an MoU during an event called ‘Microsoft Future Decoded’ in Mumbai.
  • Under the MoU, Microsoft Azure Stack for the first time in the world will be used to migrate live applications currently hosted in Hyderabad State Data Centre (SDC) to Vizag data centre.
Britannia signs MoU with Greece’s Chipita for joint venture in India
  • Bangalore based  Indian food-products corporation Britannia has signed an MoU with Greece’s cakes and confectionery major Chipita for exploring certain business opportunities on February 22, 2017.
  • This is the first joint venture after Britania’s tie-up with New Zealand’s Fonterra Dairy and and dairy giant Groupe Danone SA dissolved in 2009.
Digital payments industry to hit USD500 billion by 2020: Google-BCG study
  • The Digital Payments 2020 report said that digital payment industry in India is expected to reach USD 500 billion by 2020. The USD 500 billion accounts for about 15 per cent of the gross domestic product (GDP).
  • The report was jointly published by Google and Boston Consulting Group (BCG).
  • The report says that by 2020, over 50 per cent of Internet users in the country will be using the mode of payment.
  • The report projects that the non-cash contribution in the consumer payments segment will double to 40 per cent.
  • The estimates say digital technology in India will influence up to 45 per cent of all retail sales by 2025.
India's GDP projected to slow to 6.6% due to demonetization Strains: IMF
  • India's growth is projected to slow to 6.6% in 2016-17 fiscal due to the strains that have emerged in the economy as a result of temporary disruptions caused by demonetization.
  • The post November 8, 2016 cash shortages and payment disruptions caused by the currency exchange initiative have undermined consumption and business activity, posing a new challenge to sustaining the growth momentum. India's economy grew at 7.6% in 2015-16.
Bharti Airtel to acquire Telenor India
  • The country's largest telecom services provider, Bharti Airtel (Airtel) has officially announced that it will acquire Telenor India.
  • Although both the companies did not disclose the deal size, internal sources from the companies said it ranges between Rs. 6,500 crore and Rs. 7,000 crore.
  • According to Telenor, the transaction will not trigger any impairment. As part of the agreement, Airtel will acquire Telenor India’s running operations in seven circles Andhra Pradesh, Bihar, Maharashtra, Gujarat, UP (East), UP (West) and Assam.
GVA growth to decline by 70 bps to 6.2% in Q3: ICRA
  • The economy based on the gross value added (GVA) is set to slip to 6.2% in the December quarter from 6.9 percent a year ago, and GDP growth will decline to 6.5% from 7.2%, stated by domestic rating agency information and credit rating agency (ICRA).
  • The slippages will be driven by the slowdown in growth of the industry and services, offsetting the healthy agricultural expansion during the period, the agency added.
Nasscom signs MoU with ITAC Japan
  • The National Association of Software and Services Companies (NASSCOM) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the IoT Acceleration Consortium (ITAC) Japan.
  • To collaborate to address digital technology shifts and accelerate IoT (Internet of Things) adoption at a global level across the industry.
DEATHS
Russia’s UN envoy Vitaly Churkin dead at 64
  • Russia’s ambassador to the United Nations, Vitaly Churkin has died in New York City. He was 64.
  • Churkin has been Russia’s envoy at the United Nations for a little over a decade and was considered Moscow’s great champion at the UN.

International Mother Language Day: 21st Feb
  • UNESCO celebrated International Mother Language Day (IMLD) on February 21, 2017 under the theme "Towards Sustainable Futures through Multilingual Education". 
  • To foster sustainable development, learners must have access to education in their mother tongue and in other languages. 
  • It is through the mastery of the first language or mother tongue that the basic skills of reading, writing and numeracy are acquired. Local languages, especially minority and indigenous, transmit cultures, values and traditional knowledge, thus playing an important role in promoting sustainable futures.
INTERNATIONAL AFFAIRS
India, Rwanda signed MoUs in innovation aviation and visa requirements
  • The agreements were inked in Kigali in the presence of Vice President Mohammed Hamid Ansari and Rwandan Prime Minister Anastase Murekezi during a business forum meet.
  • Vice President Ansari was in Rwanda on the first leg of his 2-nation visit to East Africa. He was in Rwanda from 19 February to 21 February 2017 for the establishment of a bilateral air service agreement between the two nations.
Iran Launches Advanced Rockets During Military Exercises in Desert
  • The Iran’s elite Revolutionary Guard launched sophisticated rockets during a military exercise that started on February 20, 2017 in Iran’s central desert.
  • The three day maneuvers called ‘Grand Prophet 11’ will last on February 22, 2017.
  • The model of the small and advanced rockets or their capabilities have not been revealed.
  • The launch comes despite warnings from the United States and the sanctions over the previous ballistic missile test.
Russia to begin military helicopters deliveries to India in 2018
  • Russia will start initial deliveries of military helicopters to India in 2018, with assembly and manufacturing to follow in Asia's fastest growing economy.
  • India and Russia signed an agreement in October, 2016 to jointly manufacture 200 of the KA-226T helicopters for the Indian Armed Forces.
  • Both countries have agreed to cooperate in energy and defence as India seeks to modernize its armed forces and build a nuclear industry and sanctions-hit Russia looks for investment and new markets.
India and China hold first strategic dialogue in Beijing
  • India and China on 22 February 2017 held their first upgraded strategy dialogue in Beijing to sustain their bilateral ties.
  • The talk happened amidst rising tensions between the two countries over Beijing’s reluctance to support India’s bid to join the Nuclear Suppliers Group and blocking UN ban on JeM chief Masood Azhar.
  • The dialogue was opened by the remarks of the Indian Foreign Secretary S Jaishankar who said that the relations between the two countries have really acquired a steady momentum over the years.
  • The dialogue was attended by several top officials from both sides including those in-charge of nuclear disarmament issues, indicating a discussion on India’s bid to enter the Nuclear Suppliers Group (NSG).
India, Uganda agreed to cooperate in space programme and atomic energy
  • India and Uganda on 22 February 2017 agreed to cooperate in various fields like the space programme, vocational training and peaceful use of atomic energy.
  • The agreements were announced in a joint press conference by the Vice President Hamid Ansari and Ugandan President Yoweri Kauta Museveni in State House at Entebbe, the official residence of President.
  • VP Ansari was in Uganda during the second leg of 2-nation of his visit to East Africa, namely Rwanda and Uganda. He was in Rwanda from 19 February to 21 February 2017 and in Uganda from 21 February to 23 February 2017.
  • Besides these agreements, the Vice President held talks with President Yoweri Museveni at the State House. During this meet, the two leaders reviewed the entire gamut of bilateral cooperation. They also committed to work together in trade, investment, agriculture, defence cooperation and IT among others.
India, Australia MoU for cooperation in civil aviation sector approved
  • The Union Cabinet gave its approval for signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between India and Australia for promotion and development of cooperation in civil aviation security.
  • The approval was given at a meeting of the Cabinet chaired by the Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 22 February 2017 in New Delhi.
  • The MoU will also provide compliance of international obligation as well as enhance promotion in the area of security cooperation between the two countries.
NATIONAL AFFAIRS
GST council approves law to compensate states for revenue loss
  • The GST Council has approved a law to compensate states for any loss of revenue from the implementation of the new nationwide indirect taxation regime.
  • The meeting was held in Udaipur, Rajasthan first time outside national capital. It was headed by Union Finance Minister and attended by representatives from all states.
  • GST is a consumption based indirect tax levied on sale, manufacture and consumption on goods and services at a national level. It will replace a plethora of central and state indirect taxes.
Government launches SAATHIYA Resource Kit and SAATHIYA SALAH mobile app for adolescents:
  • The Union Ministry of Health and Family Welfare has launched SAATHIYA Resource Kit and SAATHIYA SALAH mobile app for adolescents as part of the Rashtriya Kishor Swasthya Karyakram (RKSK) programme. 
  • The kit and app will help Peer Educators (Saathiyas) who are introduced under the RKSK programme. 
  • The Saathiyas act as catalyst for generating demand for adolescent health services and also impart age appropriate knowledge on key adolescent health issues to their peer groups.
Gujarat Assembly passes Aadhaar Bill, 2017
  • The Gujarat Assembly on 20 February 2017 passed the Gujarat Aadhaar (Targeted Delivery of Financial and Other Subsidies, Benefits and Services) Bill, 2017.
  • The Bill empowers the state government to use Aadhaar number as the sole identifier for the delivery of various subsidies and benefits in an effective and targeted manner.
  • The government plan to link the Aadhaar number with various schemes which will help the government create a credible system to authenticate the identity of actual beneficiaries.
  • The bill is in the line with the Central Aadhaar Act, passed by the central government in 2016. The Central Aadhaar Act empowers the state governments to introduce similar laws for targeted delivery of subsidies and benefits by linking Aadhaar number of each beneficiary.
Arunachal CM Pema Khandu inaugurates Composite Regional Centre in Itanagar
  • Arunachal Pradesh Chief Minister Pema Khandu in the presence of Union Minister of State for Home Affairs Kiren Rijiju inaugurated the Composite Regional Centre at Itanagar Banquet Hall, Arunachal Pradesh on February 21, 2017
  • The main aim of the centre is to create resources and infrastructure required for developing services for persons with disabilities with an outlay of Rs.20 Crore.
  • The Composite Regional Centre at Itanagar along with a creation of 17 contractual posts for it.
  • The centre is established under the National Institute for Locomotor Disabilities (NILD), Kolkata of Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities, Ministry of Social Justice & Empowerment, Govt. of India.
Ravi Shankar Prasad launches Cyber Swachhta Kendra in New Delhi
  • Union Minister of Electronics and IT Ravi Shankar Prasad launched Cyber Swachhta Kendra in New Delhi on February 21, 2017 for Botnet cleaning and Malware analysis as a part of digital India initiative.
  • The Cyber Swachhta Kendra aims to create a secure cyber space by detecting botnet infections.
  • Cyber Swachhta Kendra will operate in close coordination and collaboration with Internet Service Providers and Antivirus companies.
  • The centre is being operated by the Indian Computer Emergency Response Team.
  • The planning of this centre was announced in 2015 with an outlay of Rs 100 crore.
Kashmir to observe 2017 as the 'Year of Apple'
  • Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Mehbooba Mufti has declared 2017 as ‘Year of Apple’ in a major bid to promote the famed Kashmiri apples in domestic and foreign markets.
  • It was announced after she launched High Density Apple Plantation Scheme in Srinagar.
  • Under this scheme, state government provide high-density apple plants to the farmers. Government will provide 50% subsidy.
  • The high density plants have a yield of 50-70 metric tonnes per hectare against 10-12 tonnes in case of conventional plants. J&K at 11.2 metric tonnes is the largest apple producing State in India, which accounts for 71% of national production.
Farm Science Congress in Bengaluru
  • The 13th Agricultural Science Congress being organised in Bengaluru from February 21-24 by the National Academy of Agricultural Sciences (NAAS) and the Indian Council for Agricultural Research (ICAR).
  • It will focus on ‘Strategies for Climate Smart Agriculture’. The event will be held at the University of Agricultural Sciences Bengaluru's GKVK campus in collaboration with the local ICAR institutes. It is expected to draw about 2000 participants including scientists from across the world.
Telangana Govt Signs MoU With NABARD For Rs 874-Crore Loan
  • The Telangana Government has signed an MoU with NABARD here for a loan of Rs 874 crore to the Horticulture Development Corporation to cover 3.15 lakh acres under Micro Irrigation scheme for 2016-17 and 2017-18.
  • A Government release quoted Agriculture Secretary Parthasarathi as saying agriculture in the state is rain-fed and about 42.82 lakh acres depend on borewells for irrigation.
  • Due to change in climatic conditions, the ground water level is decreasing and it is the need of the hour for the farmer to use micro irrigation
  • Parthasarathi said the target for the year 2016-17 under the NABARD project is to cover 2.23 lakh acres allotted to all districts in the state.
India's first dedicated heliport to open in Delhi on February 28
  • The capital will soon get India's first dedicated "heliport" for flying in and out of Delhi to nearby areas in choppers.
  • Aviation secretary R N Choubey said the Rs 100-crore project will be inaugurated on February 28 and will be an integrated one with a chopper maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) unit part of the complex at Rohini.
  • Owned by Pawan Hans Helicopters Ltd (PHHL), the hugely-delayed heliport will have a large number of parking bays and an AC passenger terminal building with car parking area for the flyers.
National Biodiversity Congress 2017 held in Kerala
  • The National Biodiversity Congress (NBC) 2017 was held in Thiruvananthapuram, capital of Kerala. The event is hosted by the Kerala State Biodiversity Board.
  • NBC is one of the significant biodiversity mega events of the country. It aims to identify practical, evidence-based case studies at the regional level to support the plan of action.
  • The focal theme of 2017 NBC was “Mainstreaming Biodiversity for Sustainable Development”.
  • This edition of the event had organised array of programmes including exhibition, conference, capacity building workshops and Children’s Biodiversity Congress.
CBEC launches mobile app for GST
  • Central Board of Excise and Customs today launched a mobile application for Goods and Services Tax (GST) to inform the taxpayers of the latest updates on GST.
  • Launching the App, in New Delhi, Minister of State for Finance Santosh Kumar Gangwar said, through this app, taxpayers can readily access a host of GST information such as migration to GST-Approach and guidelines for migration, model GST Law, IGST Law and GST compensation law.

SpaceX Falcon 9 Rocket Successfully Launches From NASA launch Pad:
  • The California-based SpaceX onboard its Falcon 9 rocket launched a robotic Dragon cargo ship with about 5,500 pounds (2,500 kg) of supplies and science experiments toward the International Space Station on February 19, 2017 from Launch Complex 39A of NASA’s Kennedy Space Center in Florida.
  • After the launch, the rocket’s first stage separated and touched down on a landing pad at the nearby Cape Canaveral Air Force Station.
  • It marked the eighth successful landing for SpaceX Rocket Company. The company became the first private space firm to launch a rocket from a NASA facility.
  • This was the first time that SpaceX is using the LC-39A launchpad at the Kennedy Space Center since it leased it from NASA in 2014. It was originally built for the 1960s-era Apollo moon program.
Discovery of seven earth-like Exoplanets prime target in search for life: Study
  • The stunning discovery of seven Earth-like planets orbiting a small star in the galaxy opens up the most promising hunting ground so far for life beyond the Solar System.
  • Researchers said, all seven roughly match the size and mass of our own planet and are almost certainly rocky, and three are perfectly perched to harbour life-nurturing oceans of water.
  • Most critically, their proximity to Earth and the dimness of their red dwarf star, called Trappist-1, will allow astronomers to parse each one's atmosphere in search of chemical signatures of biological activity.
  • A scientist at the University of Cambridge, co-author Amaury Triaud said that they have made a crucial step towards finding life out there and now they have the right target. The Trappist-1 system, a mere 39 light years distant, has the largest number of Earth-sized planets known to orbit a single star.
  • It also has the most within the so-called "temperate zone" -- not so hot that water evaporates, nor so cold that it freezes rock-solid. The discovery adds to growing evidence that our home galaxy, the Milky Way, may be populated with tens of billions of worlds not unlike our own- far more than previously suspected.

India to host 2019 Combined World Cup for shooting
  • The National Rifle Association of India(NRAI) announced that India will be hosting the Combined World Cup for shooting in 2019 during the meeting held in New Delhi.
  • Combined World Cup will a qualifying event for the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. It will comprises all the three categories — shotgun, rifle and pistol.
Mithali, Harmanpreet in top-10 of ICC rankings
  • India’s one day captain Mithali Raj and Harmanpreet Kaur were placed 2nd and 10th in the ICC batswomen’s rankings released after the World Cup qualifier that ended recently.
  • Meg Lanning of Australia leads the charts with 804 points while Raj with 733 points is second in the list. Harmanpreet, known for her towering sixes has 574 points.
