Appointments:
New Governor for Arunachal Pradesh: V Shanmuganathan
Meghalaya Governor V Shanmuganathan was sworn in as the governor of Arunachal Pradesh.
President Pranab Mukherjee had asked Shanmuganathan to discharge the additional duty of Arunachal Pradesh after Governor Jyoti Prashad Rajkhowa was sacked on September 12, weeks after the Supreme Court restored the Congress government in the state.
Nawazuddin Siddiqui appointed brand ambassador of “Samajwadi Kisan Bma Yojana”
The Uttar Pradesh government appointed Bollywood actor Nawazuddin Siddiqui as the brand ambassador of its flagship programme 'Samajwadi Kisan Beema Yojana', a scheme aimed at insuring farmers.
Chief Minister Akhilesh Yadav announced this at a function at his official residence. Flanked by Nawazuddin, Akhilesh hoped that with the actor's joining, awareness about the scheme will reach far and wide.
In the scheme, many facilities like cashless treatment upto Rs 2.5 lakh and Rs one lakh for organ transplant have been included.

Gionee signs (MoU) with Haryana for setting up mobiles manufacturing unit
Gionee mobile phones would now be manufactured in Haryana as the company today signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Haryana Government to set up its mobile phones manufacturing hub with an initial investment of Rs 500 crore which, later on, would be increased to Rs 1500 crore.

Axis Bank ties up with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to offer specialised banking courses
Private sector Axis Bank has tied up with Banaras Hindu University (BHU) to offer specialised banking courses.
The bank along with the Faculty of Commerce at BHU will develop the design and curriculum of courses, besides deciding on e-learning modules, structure and courseware, Axis Bank said in a release.
The partnership will offer courses like Masters in Commerce (MCom), Master of Financial Management (MFM), Master of Financial Management (Risk & Insurance) MFM - RI, Master of Foreign Trade (MFT).

Ramesh Raskar honoured with innovation award for mentoring young people in technology
India-born innovator and scientist Ramesh Raskar has won the prestigious 2016 Lemelson-MIT Prize.
He is an associate professor at Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT’s) Media Lab.
He is known for his co-invention of an ultra-fast imaging camera that can see around corners, low-cost eye-care solutions.
It also enables users to read the first few pages of a book without opening the cover.

PM Modi today greets engineers on occasion of Engineers Day
Prime Minister Narendra Modi today greeted engineers on the occasion of Engineers Day. In a tweet, Mr Modi said, the intellect, dedication and curiosity of engineers has led to several path-breaking innovations.
Mr Modi also paid his tributes to Bharat Ratna M. Visvesvaraya on his birth anniversary. Mr Modi said, M Visvesvaraya is remembered and respected as a pioneering engineer. Engineers’ Day marks the birth anniversary of M Visvesvaraya.
International Democracy Day being observed: 15th September
International Democracy Day is being observed today to raise public awareness about the democratic system. This year's theme is "Democracy and the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development".
Government agencies and non-governmental organizations are holding various activities and events around the world to promote democracy. The UN General Assembly had decided in November 2007, to observe 'International Democracy Day' every year on September 15.

Vice-President to leave for Venezuela to participate in 17th NAM Summit
Vice-President Mohammad Hamid Ansari will leave for Venezuela this afternoon to participate in the 17th Summit of the Non Aligned Movement or NAM.
The Summit is being held at Margarita Island in Venezuela on 17th and 18th of this month. The summit will be preceded by deliberations at the Ministerial and Senior Official levels.
17th NAM Summit is expected to bring together leaders from the 120 developing countries that are members of this Movement.
I&B Minister Venkaiah Naidu asks media to refrain from sensationalism
Information and Broadcasting Minister M. Venkaiah Naidu has asked media to refrain from sensational reporting and focus on the truth.
Addressing the 49th convocation of Indian Institute of Mass Communication in New Delhi, Mr Naidu said, sensationalism has unfortunately become order of the day in the hunt for headlines.
Government reiterates, Jan Dhan Yojana continues to be robust scheme
Government today reiterated that the Pradhan Mantri Jan Dhan Yojana (PMJDY) continues to be a robust scheme which provides benefits even when there is no balance in the accounts.
Finance Ministry in a release said, government remains committed to adding value to the PMJDY by routing benefits directly into bank accounts under various schemes.
Madhya Pradesh government to release White Paper on malnutrition
The Madhya Pradesh government will release a White Paper on malnutrition and maternal-infant mortality rate. Chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan has made an announcement in this regard.
AIR Correspondent reports that in a meeting in capital Bhopal, chief minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan instructed officials of the woman and child development and health department to launch a joint drive to remove malnutrition from the state.
A committee comprising woman and child development minister, health minister and other senior officials has been set up to make necessary arrangements for this.
Nepal Prime Minister to arrive in New Delhi on four-day visit
Newly-elected Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal, also known as Prachanda, is arriving in New Delhi today on a four-day visit to India.
During the visit, he will hold talks with Prime Minister Narendra Modi and call on President Pranab Mukherjee.
This will be Mr Prachanda's first bilateral visit abroad after assuming office last month.

India offers additional developmental assistance of one billion dollars to Afghanistan
India has pledged additional one billion dollars development assistance to Afghanistan for capacity building, strengthening democratic institutions, education, health, agriculture and energy.
The announcement was made after delegation level talks between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Afghanistan President Ashraf Ghani in New Delhi.
United States sign 38 billion dollars deal with Israel
United States has signed a 38 billion dollars deal with Israel to provide the country with military assistance over a 10-year period.
The deal is the largest such agreement the US has ever had with any country.
Under the terms, Israel will receive 3.8 billion dollars a year from the US, up from the 3.1 billion dollars Washington currently gives Israel annually under a 10-year deal that ends in 2018.
Aleksander Ceferin elected UEFA president, succeeds Michel Platini
Aleksander Ceferin has been elected the new president of UEFA, beating Michael van Praag in the race to succeed Michel Platini.
Ceferin, who was appointed president of the Slovenian FA in 2011 and has a background in law, won 42 of the 55 votes at the Extraordinary UEFA Congress in Athens on Wednesday.
He replaces the banned Platini, who was found guilty of ethics violations in December for taking a payment of 2 million Swiss francs ($2m) from FIFA in 2011.

Former England Test batsman Graeme Hick has been appointed as Australia's batting coach for the next four seasons.
Hick joins head coach Darren Lehmann, fielding coach Greg Blewett and new bowling coach David Saker in the Australia set-up, and will begin his contract at the start of the home Test series against South Africa in November.
