Coca-Cola appoints SarvitaSethi as VP (Finance) for India and South West Asia
Beverages company Coca-Cola appointed SarvitaSethi
as the new Vice-President (Finance) for India and South West Asia.
Sethi took the charge from Sanjeev Kumar, who is
moving to Lagos as Director-Finance for Coca-Cola West Africa. He will also be
heading company’s finance operations for 31 countries.
Sethi will be reporting to Coca-Cola India and
South West Asia President VenkateshKini.

Chennai's Advay Ramesh wins Google Community Impact Award from Asia:
Advay Ramesh, a Class 10 student from Chennai, won
the prestigious Google Community Impact Award from Asia, a theme based award part
of Google Science Fair 2016.
Ramesh bagged the award for creating a device that
enhances fishermen's safety and productivity.

IISc top Indian institute in QS' BRICS rankings
Ranked at number six, the Indian Institute of
Sciences (IISc), Bengaluru has been listed as the top Indian university in the
Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Rankings 2016 for BRICS nations.
While eight Indian universities ranked in the top
50, most of them, including IISc, lost ranks compared to their positions last
year.
Notably, China's Tsinghua University maintained its
top spot.

1)
New Development Bank launched by BRICS, announces loans worth 900 million
dollars
The New Development Bank launched by 5 emerging
economies, known as BRICS, has announced its first round of loans worth about
900 million dollars.
The Bank held its first general meeting in Shanghai
yesterday. Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa established the
institution last year.
The first set of loans will fund five
renewable-energy development projects, including those related to solar and
wind power generation.
NATIONAL
1) Tea Board unveils
accident cover for workers
The Tea Board of India has introduced
an accident insurance scheme for workers in small tea gardens at an annual
premium of Rs.14. Of this, tea farmers will have to pay only Rs. 3.50 annually.
The scheme provides compensation
to small tea farmers between 18 and 70 years for a Rs.2 lakh-cover.
2) Cabinet approves amendment in the Benami Transactions (Prohibition)
amendment Bill
The Union
Cabinet has given its approval for introducing amendments to the Benami
Transactions (Prohibition) (Amendment) Bill, 2015 in Parliament. The amendments
aim to strengthen the Bill in terms of legal and administrative procedure so as
to overcome the practical difficulties which may arise in the implementation of
the provisions of the Bill when it becomes an Act.
3) Union cabinet gave Nod to Transgender Bill
The cabinet
has approved the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Bill 2016 for
social, economic and educational empowerment of transgenders.
Details:
The bill will
benefit a large number of transgender persons, mitigate the stigma,
discrimination and abuse against this marginalized section and bring them into
the mainstream of society.
It will lead
to greater inclusiveness and will make the transgender persons productive
members of the society.
The bill will
make all the stakeholders responsive and accountable for upholding the
principles underlying the bill.
It will bring
greater accountability on the part of the central government and state
governments/Union Territories administrations for issues concerning transgender
persons.
4) Nod to Sagarmala Development Company
with Rs 1,000 crore authorised share capital
To give a push to port-led
economic development under its ambitious Sagarmala project, the government
today approved incorporation of Sagarmala Development Company under the
Companies Act with Rs 1,000 crore as initial authorised share capital.
Sagarmala Development Company
(SDC) will provide equity support to the project Special Purpose Vehicles
(SPVs) and funding support to the residual projects under the Sagarmala
Programme, the Ministry of Shipping said in the statement.
5) New IT Ministry to have say over UIDAI
and NIC
A mega role for the Ministry of
Electronics and Information Technology has been carved out with say over all
policy matters relating to information technology, electronics and the
Internet, other than licensing of Internet Service Providers.
In this regard, the amendments
made by President Pranab Mukherjee to the Government of India (Allocation of
Business) Rules, 1961 pertaining to the Ministry of Electronics and Information
and the Ministry of Science and Technology and Earth Sciences were recently
notified by the cabinet secretariat.
6) Cabinet nod to setting up AIIMS in
Gorakhpur
The Cabinet Wednesday approved
establishment of a new AIIMS at Gorakhpur in UP at an estimated cost of Rs
1,011 crore.
The Cabinet on Wednesday approved
nearly Rs 9,200 crore to procure 5.50 lakh new ballot units and 5.45 lakh
control units — the two units make up an EVM — during 2016-17. The Election
Commission has proposed to buy nearly 14 lakh new EVMs ahead of the 2019 Lok
Sabha polls.
7) IITs could admit foreign students from
2017
IIT M Director
Ramamurthi was quoted as saying that the demand for IIT seats depends on
pricing and that the government will have to decide the cost of courses.
It was
reported earlier that the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs) wanted foreign
students to enrol and were seeking the help of the external affairs ministry.
Now, in all likelihood, the IITs in India will admit foreign students for their
undergraduate and postgraduate studies from next year.

1) India, Bangladesh to jointly inaugurate
Petrapole checkpost through video conference
Prime Minister Narendra Modi and
his Bangladeshi counterpart, Sheikh Hasina, will on Friday jointly inaugurate
the newly-constructed Petrapole Integrated Check Post, the biggest land port in
South Asia, through a video-conference.
The video-conference will also be
joined by West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee.
Petrapole-Benapole is an
important land border crossing for India-Bangladesh trade as more than 50% of
the India-Bangladesh trade passes through Petrapole.
Trade worth more than Rs. 15000
crore takes place through the checkpost, which is more than all the other
Indian land ports and land customs stations put together.
2) Turkey coup attempt: Erdoğan declares
three-month state of emergency
Turkey on
Thursday entered the first full day of a state of emergency declared by the
president, Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in the aftermath of last week’s coup attempt.
The decision, announced in a televised press conference on Wednesday night,
came after marathon meetings of the country’s national security council and the
cabinet in Ankara.

1) USA tour: Indian women hockey team beat
hosts 2-1
The Indian women's hockey team
bounced back to beat the hosts USA 2-1 in their second game of the USA tour in
Pennsylvania on Thursday.
The two teams played out a goal
less first quarter, with neither able to breach the circle and create openings.
USA took the lead in the 19th minute of the second quarter via a Jill Witmer PC
conversion. The two teams went into half time separated by that strike with the
USA leading 1-0.
