BANKING
Centre pumps Rs. 22,915
cr into public sector banks
- The Centre on 19th July allocated Rs.
22,915 crore as capital infusion (in 2016-17) in 13 public sector
banks that are burdened with non-performing loans.
- Of the allocated
amount for each bank, 75 per cent has been released for now to provide
liquidity support for lending operations.
- The balance amount
is linked to performance and would be released later.
- As part of its Indradhanush plan
to revitalise state-owned lenders, the Finance Ministry plans to infuse
Rs.70, 000 crore in the four-year period between 2015-16 and 2018-19.
- The country’s
largest public sector bank State Bank of India has
received the highest amount ( Rs. 7,575 crore), followed by Indian
Overseas Bank ( Rs. 3,101 crore) and Punjab National Bank (
Rs. 2,816 crore).
- Bank of India received Rs. 1,784 crore and Central
Bank of India Rs. 1,729 crore, while Allahabad Bank received
the least amount (Rs. 44 crore).

North Korea fires three
ballistic missiles into Sea of Japan
- North Korea has fired three ballistic
missiles into the Sea of Japan.
- US and South Korean
military officials
said the missiles were launched from the western city of Hwangju.
- The US said the
first two were short-range Scud missiles while the third
was presumed to be a mid-range Rodong.
- UN has barred North
Korea from any test of nuclear or ballistic missile technology.
Republicans formally
nominate Trump for U.S. presidency
- After vanquishing
16 party rivals, Donald Trump on 19th July secured the
party's 2016 nomination for the White House.
- The state-by-state
vote to put Trump's name in nomination took place a day after opponents
staged a failed attempt to force a vote opposing his candidacy.
World's wealthiest
countries host less than 9% refugees: Report
- The world's six
wealthiest countries host less
than 9 per cent of the world's refugees, a new report issued
on 18th July said.
- While the US,
China, Japan, Germany, France and UK make up more than half the
global economy, in 2015, they only hosted 2.1 million refugees, just 8.88
per cent of the world's total.
- Germany took the largest share of
refugees among the world's richest countries (around 700,000), with the
remaining 1.4 million split between the other five nations.
- Jordan, Turkey,
Pakistan, Lebanon, South Africa and Palestine collectively host almost 12 million
people.
India, US agree to
deepen cooperation in maritime sector
- India and the
United States have agreed
to deepen the scope of cooperation in the maritime sector.
- The American ports
have evinced keen interest in the Sagarmala program.
- According to the
Ministry of shipping, 150 projects under this program have the potential
of mobilizing 50-60 Billion US Dollars of infrastructure investment and
another 100 Billion US Dollars of investment for promoting industrial
growth.
India and WHO tie up for
promotion of Yoga, Ayurveda
- The Ministry of
AYUSH has signed an
agreement with World Health Organization for promotion of traditional
Indian systems of medicine, including Yoga and Ayurveda, globally.
- Minister of State
for AYUSH Shripad Yesso Naik said
as per the agreement, India has assigned activities to WHO for developing
technical documents under four categories.
- The four categories
include benchmarks for training in Yoga, Ayurveda, Unani medicine
and Panchkarma.
- Secretary, Ministry
of AYUSH, Ajit M Sharan and Assistant Director General, Health Systems and
Innovations, WHO, Marie Kieny, had signed the 'Project
Collaboration Agreement' in Geneva on May 13, 2016.

- He has become the first
Indian to win the coveted title of Mr. World on 19th July 2016 at
Southport Theatre, Floral Hall, Southport, UK.
- The competition saw
47 participants from around the world, giving him a stiff competition.
- Rohit Khandelwal
received a cash prize of $50,000/- on winning this celebrated title.
