Duterte sworn in as Philippines’ president
• Rodrigo Duterte was sworn in as the Philippines' 16th president
inside the Malacanang presidential palace in Manila. He will have a six-year
term.
• The first Mindanaoan president of the country, Duterte succeeds
Benigno Aquino III.
• Firebrand leader Duterte’s anti-crime programme includes plans to
reintroduce the death penalty, issuing shoot-to-kill orders to the security
services and offering them bounties for the bodies of drug dealers. He has also
called on people to kill suspected criminals.

1. Two
Indians get Queen’s Young Leaders Award 2016
• Two Indians, Kartik Sawhney and Neha Swain, have won the 2016
Queen's Young Leaders award in the United Kingdom which has been presented by
Queen Elizabeth at the British monarch in Buckingham Palace. The name of these
awardees has been announced last year in December.
• Sawhney and Swain have won the prestigious award for their
exceptional work in transforming the lives of others and making a lasting
difference in their communities.
2. Four
Indian-Americans honoured with 2016 Great Immigrants Award in US.
• Indian-origin Google CEO Sunder Pichai and three other
Indian-Americans are among the 42 US nationals honoured with this year’s
prestigious “Great Immigrants: The Pride of America” award.
• The other three Indian-Americans are Hari Sreenivasan, anchor and
senior correspondent, PBS NewsHour, Vikram Malhotra Chairman of the Americas,
McKinsey & Company and Bharati Mukherjee National Book Critics Circle
Award-winning author.

Corporation Bank focusing on recoveries, credit growth
• Corporation Bank is focusing on recovery, prevention of
delinquencies and healthy credit growth for better management of non-performing
assets (NPAs).
• In 2015-16, gross NPAs of the bank stood 9.98 per cent and net
NPAs at 6.53 per cent.

CEO Satya Nadella's debut book 'Hit Refresh' to come out in 2017
• Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella's debut book will hit stores next year
with the writer saying it is neither a 'how-to-succeed' book nor a memoir but
about change.
• 'Hit Refresh' follows three storylines: Nadella's personal journey
of transformation, the change that is taking place today inside his storied
technology company, and one that is coming in all of our lives as intelligent
machines become more ambient and more ubiquitous throughout society
DEATHS
1. Founder of
Titan, Xerxes Sapur Desai has passed away
• Xerxes Sapur Desai, the man who founded Titan Co Ltd, has died
following a prolonged illness in Bengaluru. He was 79.
• Desai played a key role in introducing India to its first quartz
watch in the late 80s when he set up Titan Co. Ltd (part of Tata Sons), after
enduring years of resistance from state-owned HMT Watches.
2. Senior
artist K.G. Subramanyan passes away
• Renowned sculptor and painter KG Subramanyan passed away in
Vadodara, Gujarat following a brief illness. He was 92
• He was multifaceted artist credited with being one of the pioneers
of Indian modern art and was also a freedom fighter.
ECONOMY
1.
Maharashtra, Tata Power to ink pact for 1,000 MW for Mumbai
• Keeping in mind the future power requirements of the Mumbai
region, the Maharashtra government plans to sign a MoU with Tata Power for
sourcing 1,000 MW from the upcoming Dherand Thermal Project.
• The tie-up with Tata Power is a step in that direction. Since the
present State government came to power, the transmission capacity for Mumbai
city has increased by 1300 MW.
2. World
Bank, ISA sign agreement for collaboration in solar energy
• The World Bank announced plans to provide more than $1 billion to
support India’s solar initiatives. An agreement to this effect was signed.
• The World Bank-supported projects under preparation include solar
rooftop technology, infrastructure for solar parks, bringing innovative solar
and hybrid technologies to market and transmission lines for solar-rich states.
3. CCEA nod
for Rs. 6,000 cr road projects
• The Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs approved implementation
of three highway projects entailing a cost of almost Rs. 6,000 crore.
• These include Aurangabad-Telwadi (Rs. 2,029 crore),
Angul-Sambalpur (Rs. 2,491 crore) and Phagwara-Rupnagar (Rs. 1,444 crore).
These projects will be implemented in three different modes –
Aurangabad-Telwadi on a BOT (toll) basis, Angul Sambalpur on an EPC basis and
Phagwara-Rupnagar on hybrid annuity basis.
INTERNATIONAL
1. Indian
Warships visit Vladivostok, Russia
• Three Indian naval ships reached Russia as part of efforts to
enhance maritime cooperation between the navies of both countries.
• INS Sahyadri, Shakti and Kirch, reached Vladivostok on a four day
visit as part of deployment of the Eastern Fleet to the South China Sea.
• The visiting IN ships are likely to conduct exercises with the
Russian Navy, aimed at enhancing interoperability in communication as well as
Search and Rescue procedures.
2. Malaysia
gets 2 women Shariah HC judges
• Two women have been appointed as judges of Malaysia’s Islamic
Shariah High Court for the first time in the history of the judiciary of the
Muslim-majority country.
• Noor Huda Roslan, 40, and Nenney Shuhaidah Shamsuddin, 41,
received their official letters of appointment from Selangors Sultan
Sharafuddin Idris Shah during a ceremony at the Istana Bukit Kayangan.
• Shariah High Court, also known as Syriah High Court, refers to
Sharia law in Islamic religious law and deals with exclusively Islamic laws,
having jurisdiction upon every Muslim in Malaysia.

1. Indian
Railways PSU Rites exports modern passenger coaches to Bangladesh
• RITES Ltd., a PSU under the Ministry of Railways, has supplied 60
Broad Gauge passenger coaches (LHB type) to Bangladesh Railway (BR) against a
contract agreement of 120 coaches
• Two train sets, comprising of 12 coaches each- 2 AC chair car, 2
first AC sleeper car, 6 non-AC chair car and 2 power car, will presently be
deployed to operate 3 pairs of inter-city trains between Dhaka and Rajshahi.
These modern stainless steel coaches manufactured by Rail Coach Factory,
Kapurthala, are equipped with Fiat bogies capable of running at maximum speed
of 160 kmph.

• Minister of Railways Shri Suresh Prabhakar Prabhu inaugurated/
launched following facilities/services through video conferencing from Rail

• Dedication of Improved passenger amenities at Gurgaon station.
• Laying of Foundation-stone for auto car loading facility at
Farukhnagar.
• Railway has renovated Gurgaon Railway Station into a modern
station.
3. J&K
govt launches e-file tracking system
• In a major e-Governance initiative, Jammu and Kashmir Chief
Minister Mehbooba Mufti launched the new workflow based e-file tracking system
in the Civil Secretariat - the seat of the government.
• The new IT-enabled file-tracking system implemented by Jammu and
Kashmir e-Governance Agency (JKeGA) is aimed at automating file, correspondence
and document tracking within government offices.
4. EESL Signs
MoU with TERI
• Energy Efficiency Services Limited (EESL) entered into a strategic
partnership with The Energy and Resources Institute (TERI) for two years. The
MoU was signed between the two parties in the presence of Union Minister of
State (IC) Power, Coal and New & Renewable Energy, Shri Piyush Goyal.
• Agreement as Strategic Partners, to work jointly for the
achievement of common goals and objectives related to energy efficiency in
India and abroad.

Youth Summit to be held in Guwahati
• A Youth Summit for the BRICS countries will be held in Guwahati
from July 1-3 with the theme 'Youth as bridge for Intra-BRICS Exchanges'.
• The subjects to be covered are skill development and
entrepreneurship, social inclusion, youth volunteerism and youth participation
in governance.

1. India
Test-Fires Surface-To-Air Missile Developed Jointly With Israel
• India successfully test fired a new Surface-to-Air ballistic
missile developed jointly with Israel.
• The medium range missile (MR-SAM), a product of joint venture
between India and Israel, was successfully test launched from a mobile launcher
in the Integrated Test Range (ITR) at Chandipur, odisha.
2. HCL Info
implements India’s first integrated defence communication network
• India’s first integrated Defence Communication Network (DCN) was
launched by Union Defence Minister Manohar Parrikar in South Block, Delhi.
• The network enables the Army, the Air Force, the Navy and the
Special Forces Command to share situational awareness for a faster
decision-making process.
3. High-speed
OPV INS Tarasa launched
• Indian Navy has launched INS Tarasa, the fourth and last ship in
the series of the Water Jet Fast Attack Craft (WJFAC).
• It is being built by Kolkata (West Bengal) based Garden Reach
Shipbuilders & Engineers Ltd (GRSE).

Youth Summit, 2016 at Guwahati, Assam
• BRICS Youth Summit, 2016 is being organised at Guwahati (Assam)
from 1- 3rd July. The Theme for the Summit is “Youth as bridge for Intra-BRICS
Exchanges”.
• The subjects to be covered by thematic debates are
(i) Skill Development and Entrepreneurship
(ii) Social Inclusion

SPORTS
1. Amul signs
up as official sponsor of Indian team to the Olympics
• India’s leading food products company Amul has signed up as the
official sponsor for the Indian contingent to the Rio Olympics 2016.
• The company will launch a series of advertising campaigns for milk
and other dairy products to promote this association. Amul has embarked upon an
‘Eat Milk with Every Meal’ campaign.
2. Golf Back
in the Olympics After 112 Years
• The 2016 Rio games will be the first Olympics after 112 years to
host a Golf event.
• the session of the 121st International Olympic Committee Session
chose to re-introduce the sport for the games
• Golf has been reintroduced for 2016 and 2020 Olympics.
3. BCCI mulls
setting up its own stadium in Delhi to avoid shifting of matches
• The BCCI is planning to build a state-of-the-art cricket stadium
in New Delhi.
• The board has planned to buy land and build a cricket stadium,
which will be owned and administered by BCCI, and does not belong to any state
association.
• The cricket control body will run the stadium and marquee games
like World Cup finals, IPL finals will be hosted at this stadium.

centers: ANUR, Vikasa ink MoU
• East Godavari Collector H. Arun Kumar has announced that 30,000
youth coming out from all the 400 and odd colleges in the district are going to
get employment with the MoU between Vikasa and Adikavi Nannaya University
(ANUR) that was entered.
• Vikasa was a government agency that provided employment
opportunities to youth in East Godavari and the Adikavi Nannaya University was
one of the big universities in this region after the Andhra University.
2. IRCTC to
run luxury trains to Shirdi, Goa, Tirupati
• The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) will
soon operate ‘Three Star’ luxury trains from Secunderabad to Shirdi, Goa and
Tirupati with the basic tariff structure of normal bus fares.
